....IT TURNED INTO SOMETHING BIGGER,.... prior to the cordyceps breakout, tess had been living in new haven where she spent the entirety of her life. born and raised there, tess found a perfectly normal and happy life there. her parents were both average, run of the mill individuals who were hard-working and provided a comfortable lifestyle for tess and her younger sister grace. from a young age, tess had always expressed interest in knowledge, drawn to the profession of teaching as a means of divulging in this interest. she always connected well with youth, as evidenced by her close relationship with her sister. she'd lived a relatively happy life, perhaps an average one at best that lacked any sense of excitement but it was one she was content with. she marries her high school sweetheart almost immediately after high school out of sheer whirlwind of romance and complacency, despite her parents' warnings about how foolish the decision was. her and alec enjoy a few years of marriage, though it had soon begun deteriorating when his wandering eye and restlessness for the domesticity of their life began rearing its' head.

....SOMEWHERE IN THE HAZE, GOT A SENSE I'D BEEN BETRAYED....... the cordyceps breakout occurs in her early twenties in the midst of her attending teacher's college with the intention to become an english teacher in the near future. everything descends into complete chaos. at the outset of it, in an attempt to flee the city, her parents, her younger sister and alec all pile into a car in hopes of making it safely to a designated quarantine zone. their car eventually gets stuck with the countless other cars attempting to flee their city and they fall under attack by these creatures they'd been warned about. tess desperately tries to fight back, but alec flees into the distance, leaving them all behind. her parents fall victim to two infected — runners, she would soon come to know them as — and the only reason her and grace are able to make it out of there alive is due the kindness of a group of strangers that are able to kill the infected and haul them off. that's the last time she ever sees alec again, his final betrayal sinking into her like a dagger to the heart.the death of her parents is incredibly difficult to reconcile. there's barely any time to grieve as they desperately try to make it to the quarantine zone safely. her only priority at that point is grace, and they get incredibly lucky to not run into any other troubles before making it to the boston qz. there, they find safety and refuge. but the peace doesn't last very long. three years since the breakout, she finds grace missing from her bed. they've been having issues of grace wanting more freedom, feeling trapped in the qz. she just wants to see the outside of the walls for a brief second, hearing stories of those that lived outside of the quarantine zones. in a desperate search for her sister, she finds herself too late. she watches as an infected lays a bite to her sister's arm before tess is able to fend it off with a shot to the head. with a forced hand, her sister begs her to put her to rest before the infection spreads. she bids a final farewell to grace before she mercifully kills her.

....BROKEN AND BLUE, SO I CALLED OFF THE TROOPS..... following her sister's death, tess falls into a deep state of grief. she no longer had anyone in her life. in a complete state of despair, she turns into a ruthless state of being. she became a hardened survivor that lived in one of the few quarantine zones that were still in existence. as a means of living, she becomes a smuggler, operating in black market trade that still existed despite living in a city that was under martial law. she eventually meets joel miller who she befriends. he becomes the sole person she truly trusts. eventually, she meets ellie williams and her and joel are tasked with smuggling ellie out of the city. they soon learn that she survived an infected bite and that she could be the key to a cure. but amidst this journey to get ellie to a group of fireflies who were tasked with helping her, tess becomes infected herself. in a last ditch effort to help joel and ellie get out of the building they were trapped in, she sacrifices herself and makes joel promise to stay with ellie and finish what they started. in refusal to turn into "one of those things", she goes down guns blazing to the soldiers that had tracked them down and surrounded them.
